Growing significance of background screening in IT industry
The inherent risk in hiring the wrong candidate, has never been greater in any industry as it is today in the IT industry. If IT companies today do not conduct background checks and exercise due diligence in hiring, it is a certain that they’ll be inviting expensive litigation, workplace violence, theft and embezzlement for the company.
Studies have shown that background checks uncover criminal records for up to 10% of job applicants, and at least one-third of all resumes contain false information.
In most IT companies employees have access to personal, confidential information of clients hence it becomes crucial for IT companies to verify the credentials of candidates before hiring them.
Also with the boom in the IT industry there are a lot of employment opportunities in this sector, so people tend to misrepresent facts in their resumes in order to get a high paying job in a good company. They may give incorrect information relating to their educational qualifications, details of previous and current employment etc. The percentage of candidates submitting fake resumes is higher for companies who do not have a policy of background screening.
Hence a background screening process is almost indispensable for IT organizations today to safeguard themselves from wrong hiring decisions which can prove devastating to their company’s reputation in future. |
